2013 Australian Craft Awards Winners Announced
The 2013 Australian Craft Awards national winners were announced Friday 1st November at the Tasmanian Craft Fair, Deloraine, Tasmania by the Premier of Tasmania, Lara Giddings & Mark Bergin Chairman of the Australian Craft Awards. Read on to see who won the category as well as the "Best of" awards.

The 2013 Australian Craft Awards national winners were announced Friday 1st November at the Tasmanian Craft Fair, Deloraine, Tasmania by the Premier of Tasmania, Lara Giddings & Mark Bergin Chairman of the Australian Craft Awards.
“As one of Australia’s premier craft events, the Tasmanian Craft Fair was a natural choice for the Australian Craft Awards” said Mark Bergin “These awards celebrate the role that craft plays in contemporary society and recognises the enormous talent that resides in all realms of Australian craft.
“ In addition to the national category winners there are 9 “Best by media” awards covering ceramics, glass, metal, mixed media, textiles, paper, plastic, wood and other. Among the recipients were Sneaky Boarding Design – Pallets be a Buffet, Karen Fennell and Sally Anderson - Two Threads and Sharyn Dingeldei, Dura Mater (Tough Mother) all of whom were both category and media winners.
Also awarded was Mairi Ward who was the recipient of the Chairman’s Award. In his announcement Mr Bergin said “Mairi’s submission presented a wonderous body of work with unbridled courage and outstanding creativity”.
The Australian Craft Awards, as with other design100 programs, are unique in that they are open to all craft practitioners active in the Australian marketplace with winners determined by a combination of the judging panel, the craft industry and marketplace ratings. All ratings for each project are aggregated and averaged. Awards are provided to the leading entry with the highest average. This ensures that the Awards showcase the best of the entries as determined by the market, industry and the panel.
In its first year the Awards attracted near 100 entrants and over 2000 ratings. “The response from those who have participated in the program has been extremely positive and we celebrate the courage of all entrants who have seized this opportunity. We look forward to the growth of this program and working together with organisations such as Design Tasmania in promoting the talent and raising the profile of craft in Australia.”
The Australian Craft Awards are a collaboration of 10 groups; each contributor has had a key role in bringing the awards to the market. “Without the input of our collaboration partners we wouldn’t have been able to launch” said Mark Bergin. “The expertise and input of our advisory panel with representatives from Craft (VIC), Object (NSW), Jam Factory (SA), artisan (QLD), craft ACT (ACT) & Design Tasmania (TAS), has been a great accelerator. The craft community covers a wide range of cultural and commercial considerations. The work that has come through this year spans the breath of commissioned for exhibition, unencumbered creative expression and made for market pieces. It’s been a joy to have the opportunity to survey the work and give the entrants recognition and exposure for their great work”
