Project Overview

This 1,000-sq ft Cullinan West apartment in Nam Cheong, Hong Kong is a dream cocoon that celebrates art and the joyful rhythm of life. The meticulous integration of geometry and lighting makes a world of difference in how this home looks and feels. It is also an art-inspired home that oozes personality and depth by layering in colors, patterns, and textures. A touch of turquoise evokes a sense of calm and relaxation as it conjures up images of the soothing ocean. When paired together with clean, crisp lines, the bold color adds energy and offers a modern, minimalist aesthetic. The ocean-inspired turquoise shade of the wall dining bench and chairs in plush velvet upholstery echo the vintage luxury vibe of the feature wall at the entrance and the living room.

Project Brief

The owners are avid art enthusiasts. Their brief was to create an airy and stylish home where they could savor the beauty of art and nature, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Complementing the iconic location and stunning sea view of this home, the design of the dining area aimed to extract lights, colors, textures, and impressions from nature, and inject them into the space.
As the owners love music and art, we utilized and made the Bang & Olufsen Beosound Shape modular, wall-mounted speaker system the centerpiece of the living room, creating a creative wall transformation from basic to brilliant. The hexagonal speakers are eye-catching and add shapes and textures to the interior. The well-balanced juxtaposition of shapes and colors leads the eye through a continuous and harmonious flow from one area to another.

Project Innovation/Need

A stylish glass display cabinet is strategically positioned against a mirror wall. The reflective finishes provide a striking contemporary contrast with the turquoise theme. The mirror wall does wonders by boosting brightness in the space and adding atmosphere and dimension. This reflection trick also allows those not facing the windows to relax and indulge in the gorgeous sea view while dining.
Lighting plays a vital role in the symphony of our senses. To create an aesthetically soothing and warm ambiance, we devised a lighting scheme that interweaves various forms of light and shadow. Floating TV and shoe cabinets with discreet under-cabinet luminaires infuse the space with a sense of calmness and elegance. Defined dome-shaped features paired with subtle light troughs create an interesting interplay of light and shadow with depth and sophistication. The design evokes a harmonious rhythm that is soothing and reassuring to the eye.
Geometric dome-shaped details create a sense of cohesiveness, flow, and rhythm in this living room. From the light troughs to the trimmings of floor-to-ceiling cupboards and glass display cabinets above the dining bench, these Roman architecture-inspired arch features are timeless and appeal to the senses. As the light of the statement pendant lamp bounces off the reflective glass and back mirror of the cabinet, the space is infused with a sense of warmth and intimacy.

Design Challenge

Having only one floor-to-ceiling window, predominantly positioned in the living room, the dining area experiences a relatively lower level of brightness in the overall living and dining zone. Mirrors have been strategically incorporated into the foyer and dining room areas to maximize the utilization of natural daylight from the windows in the living room. By reflecting and spreading the incoming light, the mirrors enhance the overall brightness of the space, minimizing the reliance on artificial lighting during the daytime. This not only reduces energy consumption but also creates a visually pleasing and well-lit atmosphere. Additionally, the interconnected design of the master, guest, and kids' rooms optimizes the abundant natural daylight available, further enhancing the overall brightness of the home.
The design also needed to cater to the owners' extensive clothing collections, accommodating separate spaces for him and her. This was achieved by expanding the master bedroom space into the adjacent guest bedroom, where a newly created walk-in closet provides a dedicated and stylish storage solution.

Sustainability

Sustainable design principles played a central role in guiding our decisions throughout this project, ensuring that we prioritized environmentally-friendly materials and practices. A comprehensive material analysis was conducted, taking into account the existing oak wood flooring. We chose to retain the oak wood flooring as it not only aligns with the overall color tone of the home but also demonstrates our commitment to waste reduction and sustainable design choices.
To further promote a healthier indoor environment, we opted for kid-friendly paint with low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This conscious choice reduces the release of harmful chemicals, contributing to improved air quality.
